Traits Required if Humans are to Survive the Apocalypse

In the novel Oryx and Crake, there exists a new species of beings, called the Crakers. Crake, their creator had the option of using whatever genes desirable to make these new individuals, and chose to make them innocent (and thus, to an extent, ignorant), unaware of color (to eliminate racism), and non-hierarchical (since they lacked the neural complexes to create it). These characteristics, among others chosen, had relatively logical reasons for their existence, but in my opinion, if let into the wild, these Crakers have no chance for survival, probably all be eaten by the first pigoon they see.

Intelligence is a main factor that has allowed humans to thrive and overtake the world of today. With technological advancements and scientific discoveries, we have increased life expectancy to 70 years, with Americans having a life expectancy of 78 years. By not giving Crakers the capacities to think like normal human beings, and by giving them growth hormones to accelerate growth, Crakers do not have the same intelligence or life experiences that would allow them to survive in the world. By programming death at age 30, Crakers, if smart enough, would realize that 30 years is not long enough to make any sort of accomplishment or to enjoy life for what it’s worth. It is important to know that if intelligence is present, it does not necessarily mean that it will be used. There requires something to motivate creative thought and application of knowledge to form new knowledge.

This motivation may be to inherently want the greatest good for all of mankind, through the less logical characteristic of being able to empathize with others. Empathy will diminish the possibility that a select few will rise and oppress the masses; there will be less pain and suffering caused by fellow human beings. As long as human beings are intelligent and empathetic, they will be able to live long, happy lives, and will be able to stand against the pigoons.

Love and Peace,

  1. What about the expression: “ignorance is bliss” ? You mention that 30 years isn’t enough to make accomplishments and enjoy life for what its worth. But if they don’t know any better, are they necessarily unhappy?
