Maybe this is one of those English majoresque interpretations of a text, but it seems like the majority of the characters that smoke cigarettes in the novel are “female.” Channeling Freud here, but oral fixations, penis envy, Oedipal/Electra complexes consistently appear in Middlesex, which brings up some interesting questions regarding whether Eugenides intended the inclusion of these psychoanalytic constructs, and if the personalities of the characters could be interpreted via Freudian developmental theories.
